Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
