NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his campaign.
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors from the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key platform, hesitated to declare this decision promptly after his victory in November.
"The choice was based on the security of my family and the need to directing my complete efforts on enacting the agenda for affordability voters voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.
He resided in Astoria, Queens, a community known for its abundance of immigrant communities and international dining.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the best of New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will forever remain a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.
During his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his opponents, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for public city functions, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.
Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, a policy where the city sets limits on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
City residents consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
