The Lakers star knew his historic streak of reaching double digits was threatened. In that crucial moment, however, he wasn't bothered.
The correct basketball play involved passing the basketball – so he did. Following that play, the legendary streak was over.
James's astounding streak of 1,297 consecutive NBA regular season games with 10+ points ended on Thursday night, when the league's career points king finished with eight total points during the Lakers' close victory over the Toronto Raptors. He made the decisive pass, finding Rui Hachimura for a triple as time expired.
“None,” James said after being questioned regarding the conclusion of his run. “The team got the victory.”
He might have attempted to win the contest – and preserved the streak – on the final possession, instead, he decided to make the extra pass to Hachimura on the wing. Hachimura sank it, prompting James celebrated triumphantly.
“Just playing the game the proper way. You always make the smart play,” James noted. That is my M.O.. It's how I learned to play. That's what I've done my whole career.”
James is very conscious exactly how many points he has at all times,” stated Lakers coach the coach. He made the play just as he has so many times.”
He returned to the game one last time at just over five minutes left, the outcome and the streak both hanging in the balance. At that stage, he had a mere six points on 3 for 15 from the field at that juncture.
He scored with under two minutes remaining to knot the score then missed a mid-range jumper with 1:01 left which could have pushed him into double figures.
He didn’t take a subsequent shot – even though he had a chance. A teammate gave James the ball as time wound down, yet LeBron opted to dish it off instead of shooting.
The basketball deities, when you play it the proper way, they often bless you,” Redick stated.
This incredible run commenced on Jan. 6, 2007. It stood as the most extended double-digit streak the league has ever seen: Michael Jordan had 866 straight double-digit scoring games, Kareem recorded 787, and Karl Malone recorded at 575.
LeBron is such an unselfish player,” said Lakers center Jake LaRavia.
“He’s just playing the game of basketball. He had the opportunity but because of who he is on the court and his personality as a person, he made the unselfish play, dished to Hachimura and claimed the game.”
Getting to ten points had long been a formality well before the fourth quarter began. During James’s streak, he had achieved ten points by the beginning of the final quarter 1,266 times prior to Thursday.
But two of those rare games below ten points after three periods took place just days before: He recorded nine points going into the fourth versus the Mavericks last week, and then had six going into the fourth versus the Suns earlier in the week.
LeBron was able to extend the streak against the Suns. In the following contest, it finished – yet he was celebrating regardless.
“I always just make the correct play. That comes naturally, no matter what,” James declared. When you make the smart play, the basketball gods forever giving back to me.”
