Each time a prominent honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out that year
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
