The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the popular sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it from others, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
Considering the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… sort of.
“There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
