The Oscars ceremony will commence streaming exclusively on YouTube in the year 2029, representing the most recent significant transformation in Hollywood.

The organization behind the Oscars made the announcement on this week, confirming that it entered into a long-term agreement awarding YouTube the unique international license to the Oscars through 2033.

The Oscars, which is planned for 15 March, has aired for five decades on ABC. Beginning in 2029, the ceremony will be viewable in real-time without charge on the digital platform.

This is one more major shakeup in the entertainment world, which is dealing with company buyouts and fusions, in addition to severe reductions in filming.

"Our Academy represents an international organization, and this alliance will permit us to broaden reach to the mission of the Academy to the most extensive international crowd possible - which will be positive for our membership and the movie industry," stated organization heads in a statement.

Throughout a long period, audience numbers of the ceremony have fallen, although there was a small rise in 2025, with a significant number of Gen Z and millennial watchers watching from smartphones and laptops.

In a separate statement, the video platform's chief executive called the Oscars "a key vital pillars of culture" and added that partnering with the Academy would "spark a new generation of innovation and film lovers while staying true to the Oscars' celebrated history".

The broadcast network, which has televised the ceremony since 1976, said that it was looking forward "to the next three telecasts" it will continue to air.

This decision coincides with major studios confront complex corporate battles. These potential deals were considered concerning for an sector that has witnessed severe reductions over the recent period.

In common with big production houses, cable networks have faced issues as the public has increasingly opted for digital platforms as an alternative.

The platform securing rights to the Oscars clearly signals that the dominance of online services will persist increasing.
