Liverpool's head coach stated he had to “look at myself” following the Reds suffered a 6th loss in seven English top-flight games on their own turf against Forest and insisted he would discover a way from the title holders' slump.
Nottingham Forest, fighting against the drop prior to the match, delivered the largest win at Anfield in their history as the Merseyside club slipped to an eighth loss in 11 matches in every tournament. The most expensive domestic acquisition, the Swedish striker, was again unnoticeable and Liverpool argued Murillo’s first goal should have been ruled out for comparable grounds to Virgil van Dijk’s disallowed effort against Manchester City before the international break. But the manager conceded the buck rested with him and offered no alibis.
“No one wants to listen to me now talking about refereeing decisions if you lose 3-0 in your own stadium to Forest,” stated the Liverpool head coach. “I should look at my own role initially and my team, but it demonstrates you how a goal can change the momentum of a game. Before I was just waiting for us to net a strike. Afterwards we barely created any chances.
“Of course there is a path forward, particularly with the quality players we have. Regardless if you win or are beaten when you reflect you are always considering: ‘Where can we do better, where can we adjust?’ but that is different from doubting yourself.
“I wish to stress I am accountable for the current losses. You are responsible when you are winning but also liable when you are defeated. I can not provide sufficient excuses for us to have the outcomes we have. That is far from acceptable and I am to blame for that.”
The team's performance fell apart as the coach made multiple offensive changes when pursuing the game. “It was the identical on the road at Nottingham Forest the previous campaign,” he said. “I took Ibou [Ibrahima Konaté] off and brought on the Portuguese forward and he scored immediately to equalize at 1-1. Then it was brave, currently it’s probably stupid.”
Liverpool last lost two successive at Anfield Premier League fixtures against Forest in the sixties. The most recent occasion they lost back-to-back league games by a three-goal scoreline was in the mid-60s.
Slot commented: “It was very bad. Playing at home, losing 3-0 regardless of which team you encounter is a terrible outcome. Unexpected if you look at the opening 30 minutes of the match. I haven’t seen us producing so many chances in the initial 30 minutes perhaps the entire campaign, and the initial occasion they entered in our penalty area they scored.
“It did not happen at City, but in every other fixture we have been the controlling team and were able to generate opportunities. Lately it is nearly consistently that we miss our opportunities and the ones we allow go in.”
