Senegal's Rising Star Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

When I enter the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to until after the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and natural ability convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure was not a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back home,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Year and European Arrival

That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to victory and earning player of the tournament.

Soon after, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to control his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the game.
