New York state AG has introduced a fresh digital platform encouraging residents to submit images and footage of ICE operations around New York. This step follows a shortly after a significant immigration operation shook NYC's Chinatown, prompting large-scale outcry.
A congressional representative disclosed during a news conference that four citizens were arrested and detained for "about 24 hours" following the previous day's operation. Rallies erupted in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Every New Yorker has the right to exist without intimidation," state officials declared in a announcement.
"Anyone who observed and recorded ICE activity yesterday, I urge you to submit that footage with us. We are committed to assessing these reports and evaluating any wrongdoings."
The portal offers options to upload photos and videos of the incident, plus a field to indicate location information. Before submitting, submitters must check a checkbox that acknowledges that "the attorney general may use any materials, images, or footage in a legal proceeding, including in a legal proceeding or official statement."
The enforcement action, which onlookers say included dozens of government officers, occurred in a famous neighborhood of Manhattan where imitation handbags, accessories, jewelry and additional items are commonly traded widely – typically to tourists.
Videos of the operation depict numerous masked and armed personnel restraining and arresting a man, and shoving away witnesses. Throngs of residents trailed the officers along the roads. An military-style transport was also seen moving along the Manhattan avenues.
In a midweek briefing organized with the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, announced that four American citizens were detained by ICE for about 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where nationals should be arrested for without cause." He clarified the individuals were freed on the following day with no accusations made.
"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," he remarked. "This constitutes a military-style operation to incite tension. It is simply a excuse to generate turmoil for this administration to utilize the troops to stop conflict that they initiated."
Fury over the immigration operation quickly spread – each of the mayoral candidates condemned the operation, along with Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Yet again, the current administration selects oppressive displays that generate terror, rather than security. It has to end," a political candidate declared.
New York City immigrant rights groups voiced concern too.
"Immigration agents raided Manhattan's Chinatown with tactical trucks, covered personnel and protective equipment to focus on street vendors working to survive. This action had no connection to community security and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and communities," said the president of a advocacy group.
ICE policy forbids the holding of citizens and the bureau has said it will not apprehend US citizens. However, external research has discovered that numerous citizens have been detained unlawfully by immigration authorities during the period of the present government.
ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in the state and nationwide recently.
An October operation in the city center was the first known raid on an housing center of the current administration. Rallies opposing ICE are ubiquitous as are accusations of force and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a submission submitted by legal entities stated medical neglect of women with child in detention centers.
