Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities released surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning near the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
