The English squad will commence their UEFA Euro 2028 campaign at the the home of Manchester City, on the condition that they achieve the anticipated entry for a championship hosted across the bulk of Britain and the Republic of Ireland.
Manchester City’s home ground has not staged an Three Lions match since May 2016, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is highly likely to host the England side for their first match on June 10, 2028.
The English side are scheduled to play their final two group matches at the national stadium, but, if they top Group B, their knockout stage opener would be held at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean beginning the knockouts at Everton’s ground.
The tournament was unveiled at an event in a London landmark on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the organizing bodies were confronted as they approached the venue by approximately 50 protesters, who urged Israel to be kicked out from international football because of the Gaza crisis.
Banners were held up with messages stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators called out: “Kick Israel out.”
The opening game of the tournament will be staged at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a match that will feature the Welsh team if they qualify.
The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be held on a Sunday in July 2028 with a start time at 5:00 PM.
It is hoped that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will cater to families and help connect with a more diverse set of audiences.
The Irish team are due to play their first game at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would do the same at the national stadium of Scotland.
Each host nation’s squad will participate in the qualifying tournament; two reserved places will be reserved for any that do not reach the tournament through the standard process.
The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine tournament locations. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals staged at each country’s national stadium.
The qualification draw will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a tournament location last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.
“This will be a competition for the followers and a celebration of everything we cherish about the sport – its passion and power to foster unity.”
