British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
