Players of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 are buzzing regarding the chance of a surprising battle featuring a corrupted version of Esquie. This speculation emerged after the studio revealed a free major expansion packed with fresh adversaries and mysteries.
What Ignited the Speculation?
Recently shared artwork seems to depict a youthful protagonist riding Esquie advancing on a veiled foe. This visual heavily implies that the gentle giant could have a pivotal role in the forthcoming content.
Compounding the suspense, voice actors such as the actor behind the character have been spotted recording fresh lines. Previously, he was portrayed as a kind-hearted presence who offered comfort and wine to expeditioners. Yet, clues indicated a dormant powerful nature—even a line where Esquie remarked, “Bad things happen we get mad.”
Fan Reactions and Social Media Clues
Across social platforms, players are enthusiastically debating the prospect of facing a evil version. One commenter declared, “Time for the true super boss: Esquie.”
Moreover, the developer changed its profile picture to a sinister depiction of a dark character with a strong resemblance to Esquie. While this could be tied to a seasonal celebration or fan art project, the crimson gaze and jagged mane render it difficult to avoid envision a threatening foe.

Deeper Lore Possibilities
A number of theorists suggest that a key character, the sister of the protagonists, may have created a dark form of Esquie during their childhood. According to this theory, Clea may have employed this painting to scare her sibling, and now it might be hunting expeditions in a particular region of the canvas.
This speculation aligns with existing story elements, as Clea has previously meddled with the realm, changing figures and orchestrating schemes. Furthermore, the return of her voice actor supports the notion that her role will grow in the DLC.
Final Thoughts
Might these theories be overblown? Maybe the social media art is simply holiday-themed fun, and Esquie will remain his kind usual self in the upcoming update. But, with so many clues suggesting a more sinister turn, fans are keenly anticipating what revelations lie ahead in Expedition 33’s latest chapter.
