Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose impact on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
